Review of the Hunter 27_75-84 by Doug Sloan

Year built 1978
Location of boat Ft. Myers, Florida
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? ABSOLUTELY ! ! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST CHOICES I HAVE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE. THIS IS NEXT TO THE CHOICE I MADE AT 40 YEARS OLD TO SELL EVERYTHING AND GO LIVE IN HAWAII. IT FILLS MY SOUL. I LOVE MY HUNTER!
Gear that's been added I have only had it about a month so I have not had much time to work on it since I still work about 60 hours per week, but, most of my gear purchse is in the areas of safty and rescue. I purchased some flags and all new sheets. I have spent about $1,300. on having my sails cleaned and repaired.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features She is very forgiving in the balance of ballast vs. sails. I feel very safe sailing at 20% even in 25-30 MPH winds. She is quick to respond and is light enough to reach maximum hull speed in moderate winds. She is strong. She has the design that comes from much experience on the water. Her flowing form and function shows the genius needed to provied all that is truly needed with simplicity. She provides the essence of what ever sailor seeks, HARMONY with the sea!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The plastic items suc as hatches, curtain tracks, etc. are brittle and break very easily, but I understand that they are consistant with their age. She is 23 years old and the Florida sun has taken its toll.Over all I think she has held up quite well.
Sailing characterisitcs Very responsive.
Motoring characterisitcs I am disapointed in the very slow speed. I have an 8 HP Yanmar with a 2 blade prop. I may look into a 3 blade prop with a deeper bite for more speed, though I sometimes think I would like to have a folding prop for more speed under sail. Also, backing away is vey uncontroled. Maybe I just need more experience.
Liveability I almost never go below, I guess it's functional for it's size.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No experience.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought it from an individual in the a newspaper ad.
Other comments I'd like to buy another sailboat in a couple of years, and I will stongly consider another Hunter.
