Review of the Hunter 28.5 by Robert L. Ference

Year built 1988
Location of boat Cheaspeake Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It is easy to sail with 2 people. Would like more room inside. The boat is fast under sail. The engine is adaquate. Easy to maintain. We have a deep keel 5'-2" and have run aground in the bay but no problem powering out of trouble.
Gear that's been added Dodger and biminey, gps, Battery charger.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features solid boat, sails fast. feels safe under all conditions. easy to raise and lower main sail.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. direction control in reverse. Falls off if wheel is let go. Not much storge space for clothes.
Sailing characterisitcs Not tender, good solid control. easy to maintain direction.
Motoring characterisitcs Motor 8 hours with no problem. Very economical on fuel.
Liveability Good for 2, Ok for 4 for a weekend.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Dealer very helpfull. Tidewater Marina. Dealer went through controls, rigging sails, reefing etc on the boat with us.
Other comments Like the old design. Would buy another hUNTER.
