Review of the Hunter 410 by Rich Lamond

The boat's best features Livaboard space, although storage could be greater. Value for the money. She isn't a Hinckley, but she wasn't $800k either.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Aft shower sump pump - replaced float under warranty. Boat has a U/K full batten main, which carries two batten cars. According to Charles Ullmer at U/K, the design is questionable, since the configuration of the roach and the fact that there is no backstay allows for stress to be applied to the sail slide at the batten cars, thereby allowing them to hang up. One broke through the nylon sail slide. However, U/K is sending replacement parts within two days of notification. Outstanding service!  
Sailing characterisitcs Awesome! Boat is very fast and extremely well-mannered and well-balanced. A reef is prudent at about 18-20 knots, just to keep the crew comfortable.  
Motoring characterisitcs I requested a 3-bladed prop with this boat. It allows for better maneuverability in and around the marina and minimizes vibration. The 50 hp Yanmar seems to be sufficient. It is also very quiet.  
Liveability With a 13'-10" beam, 37'-10" LWL and 6'-6" headroom, there is a lot of space down below. For livaboard use, I would prefer one larger head/shower, in lieu of the two head configuration. With a little thought, one can turn the cavernous stern lazerettes into efficient storage, although it isn't "dry" storage. Reefer and freezer are adequate and the two-zone reverse cycle heating/AC units have worked well. Although we experienced no winter temperatures near zero (I think 10 or 12 degrees was the lowest on any particular day), this was one of the coldest overall winters on record. On all but a very few of the coldest days the reverse-cycle heat pumps did their job. I also carried two 5000 watt ceramic heaters on board and managed to stay comfortable. I did install 3M clear shrink plastic over the ports. With the plastic and by keeping the fans going, I had no condensation problems. Boat could use a little more electrical capacity. The two 30 amp lines require you to turn off the hot water heater, if you want to use an iron, or an electric heater.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't had to deal directly with Hunter, since I bought this boat. The dealer (Sandy Hook Yacht Sales) has taken care of everything.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sandy Hook Yacht Sales, in Sea Bright, NJ has to be one of the finest group of people I have had the pleasure of dealing with. The 410 is my 3rd new Hunter (1978 - 27 ft., 1988 - 30 ft). It is the first bought from Sandy Hook. I would highly recommend them.  
Other comments The first Hunter I purchased back in 1978 was a basic bay boat, tiller steered, underpowered and not impressive. The 1989 30 footer was 1000% better than the 27 and the 410 is another 1000% better than the 30. Hunter has come a long way. Their boats are strong, fast, well designed and well thought out. It will never be a Hinckley, but I think it is a better boat than the Beneteau 411, which is much more highly touted. I spent better than 4 hours on the Beneteau 411 and bought the Hunter after comparing.
