Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added autohelm, depth meter, speed meter, cruise air, sail cover, moter cover. 9.9 mercury outboard w/charger, am/fm/cd player, gps, vhf, upgraded lines, upgraded anchor
Structural or complex improvements reinforced main hatch top with stainless steel angle iron, reinforced front hatch with stainless steel
The boat's best features the room the hunter 26 offers
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. the main and front hatches leak and/or are weak, the rudder has some flex and tends to kick up in big seas or currents. the centerboard line is difficult to replace.
Sailing characterisitcs the boat seems to handle well in medium air and flat seas. in stronger wind and rough seas the boat will tend to head up easily and quickly without much control. reefing seems needed in winds past 12 knots. have not sailed in winds beyond 25 knots and was only using a jib in those conditions. the boat seem unbalanced when under a full main only and again will head up uncontrollably in gusts.
Motoring characterisitcs the boat motors well, although motor noise gets annoying. the usual problems wwith the motor mounted on one side exists, but it seems to be mounted on the better side.
Liveability i do not live on this boat but staying on the weekends is quit comfortable. the boat could use a little more storage area. but what do you want for a 26 foot boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) any dealings that i have had with hunter are minimal, however hunter has not given me much support with the questions that i have asked. this might be understandable in the little problems i have experienced.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I purchased the boat from Barretts marine in orlando fl. this dealer was terrible. had to set up the boat myself and was given little or no assistance. I also believe that i was over charged for the boat. I also was charged extra for the trailer that i believe was included in the price.
