Review of the Hunter 33_77-83 by Michael Hyman

Year built 1979
Location of boat Key Biscayne, Fl
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1986
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely
Gear that's been added Harken Roller Furling, A/c, New Sails, Autohelm 4000 Autopilot, Loran, Garmin Chartplotter, 3.5 kw Diesel genset in aft locker, Electric head, Full dodger with attatched bimini, three bladed prop, caribe dingy with 18 hp outboard.
Structural or complex improvements The previous owner who lived on the boat for seven years trimmed the bottom of the rudder so it was slightly shorter than the keel. He added the area trimmed to the rear edge of the rudder. This is a mixed blessing because sailing hard over pointing up, you lose a certain amount of efficiency from the rudder, but in the areas that we sail in we tend to have the occasional bump on the bottom. We also cut out some of the top of the cabin trunk which started to slightly delaminate. Awlgripped the boat's deck and hull.
The boat's best features Having the ability to feel safe pounding into a ten foot sea while carrying under a four foot draft.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The plastic windows which almost never leak, but break from age, Engine alignment.
Sailing characterisitcs This boat although not light for its size, handles great in light winds (8-15 knots). Since we generaly sail with a %150 genoa, we tend to have to take down some sail area due to our rudder configuration.
Motoring characterisitcs Under powered. Comming back from bimini, we encountered a squall with 40-50 knots of head wind which dropped our forward motion over the ground to one knot while running at 2700 rpm's. Otherwise I think that the yanmar is a bullet proof engine.
Liveability Has plenty of room for two people to cruise comfortably. It starts to get crowded with more than three people staying onboard for more than a weekend.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) nope
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any nope
