Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Dale Collmer

Year built 1993
Location of boat Columbus, Oh
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, probably. We are relative novices to sailing, but we owned a 14 ft. precision daysailor before we bought the Hunter. I'm in a zone now and would like to move up to a 30 footer. All in all, it was the boat we were looking for.
Gear that's been added A VHF radio and a tiller tamer.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features The features which sold us on the boat were the price and the fact that it was trailerable. The boat is just about as large as I'd care to trailer (though the trailer is definately lacking.) The mast raising system is great.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The gel coat is lousy. The boat seems flimsy to me, but I have nothing really to base that on. The trailer is the worst, It needs another axle and brakes. Not nearly enough toungue weight,,, it sways like a drunken sailor!
Sailing characterisitcs It's tender, but fairly well mannered. We really haven't had it in strong winds (more than 15 knots). I've never reefed the main, but there have been times when a squall has given me the shakes.
Motoring characterisitcs It motors okay. A little sluggish at low RPMs, but I have no complaint. We have a Honda 9.9.
Liveability It's okay for two, but anything more than that would be cramped. The rear berth has to head room at all, but the forward berth (dispite it's looks) is comfortable. Once the pin boards are closed though, there's precious little ventilation.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I've called them to ask to be put on their mailing list. Still no response. Other than that, I have nothing to base it on.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I live in Ohio... I bought the boat from a broker in New Orleans. The distance makes it difficult to complain about warranty work.
