Review of the Hunter 18.5 by Don Nelson

Year built 1988
Location of boat Chesapeake Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes - a good boat for its size. Simple and watertight Nice lines Of course - ready to move up Boat used and owner took care of it
Gear that's been added Not yet Would like a good boarding ladder and Bimini
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Fun / Price ratio is high. Hassle / Price ratio is low. Maximum cabin and cockpit size Mimics in many ways a larger boat - a good trainer it seems - or "decision boat" if you would like to invest a bunch of money.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Vibration under power Rudder kick up No boarding ladder
Sailing characterisitcs Had an 18' daysailor prior and this matches that performance. Not quite as responsive as say a Flying Scott. May slip a little.... All in all fine...at 10 - 18 Havent been in anything winds much higher.. High waves in the bay make the boat rock and roll too much!
Motoring characterisitcs Use a Yamaha 3.5 pushes about 6 knots The engine pivots for reverse a definite need.
Liveability Havent yet stayed the night - seems to be a good 1 - 2 day camper....
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Bought from a private party. Had to beat two other guyss looking at the boat in the water...
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
