Review of the Hunter Vision-32 by Jeff Hodor

Year built 1991
Location of boat Annapolis
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would buy her again. She is a great first boat. I was leary about owning a boat and not having more experience first. She has been basically maintence free. I only do the routine things. Very easy to sail and pretty quick at 15 knots and above.
Gear that's been added I actually added a new air conditioner used from the RV industry. It is built into the cockpit locker. I vented the locker and then ran the duct into the cabin by the companionway. Cheap and reliable. Also added a dingy, and getting a autopilot real soon.
Structural or complex improvements I got rid of the bladder type holding tank. I sacrificed some holding space and went for a ridged tank. While at it I replaced all the septic pumbing from the head back. It is totally smell free. Other than that nothing else needed.
The boat's best features The unique layout below. Much space for a 32. I have people in my marina up to a 37 be jealous. Wide 11 4 beam for a 32. Motoring is fine too.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. See head replacement above. The bladder design sprang a leak and the head mistress said the plumbing should be replaced every few years and I could tell mine wasn't. I did the tank and plumbing. So it's not a design problem just needs attention on any boat. Worth the half days work for sure. It's great now.
Sailing characterisitcs I think she points quite well. Loves to be at a close reach in 10 knots or more. I have had my knotmeter say up to 8 with a little surf and 7 easy on a day of 15 knots or more at a close reah. I am looking into options for lighter air preformance. I don't have much to compare too so I not going to blame the boat. any suggestions? cheap helps. Many days in the summer on the bay have 5 knot winds. The boat gets 2 knots if that. I just need a little more out of her.
Motoring characterisitcs The motoring is great. I backed into my tight downtown annapolis slip the first day and got a compliment from a powerboater. It was my first time manuavering a large keelboat. That says a lot for the boat. I get about 5 knots under power. 5.9 at 3300 rpm. ususally run at 2900 and settle for the 5 knots.
Liveability I lived aboard for four months summer of 2000. It went just fine. I used the aft cabin for some storage and hung a few suits and I was fine. Slept in the V-berth. Put direct TV on the dock piling and had a phone line and was all set. My marina is putting wireless interenet on now. Easy the salon of a 34 or more. Great U shape seating and large aft cabin. Huge Ice box. Friends love it the boats space.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Just a couple calls about the manual and getting info. They have been fine. I've heard good things.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Went through broker. She was fine. Purchased from a older retiring couple.
Other comments "Aria" is giving me memory after memory. I say own any boat and the love affair will begin. If your reading and thinking about it. DO IT. Get a boat and join the party. Together me and my boat met my future wife.
