Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by fred luttrell

Year built 1986
Location of boat Brant Beach Long Beach Island NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES! great value, you can't get a better boat for the money.
Gear that's been added removed the packing type shaft seal and installed a packless/mechanical shaft seal. no more adjusting the packing nut to slow the drip drip.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features FUN and easy to sail. great to weekend on ,plenty of room for a couple. It still looks great , not out of date. The Yanmar engine is very reliable and easy to take care of. I travel (motor&sail) approx. 500 miles every season (25miles/weekend) and use 15 gal of fuel for the season.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. JUST Routine maintenance items that need attention every year all systems need check out and Preventative Maintenance.
Sailing characterisitcs I like broad reaching best and have hit 8 knots on a windy (20 knot)day. average sailing speed is 5 to 6 knots. The boat sails good on all points and is great in light air.
Motoring characterisitcs Average speed 5 knots on a calm day with no strong head winds.thats cruising at 2500RPM with my 3 blade prop. The boat will turn on a dime and backing is good. the boat is underpowered when trying to buck a current or strong head winds. when heading into 25 knot winds I get 3 knots.
Liveability Great,We have two couples and our 65lb pitbull on weekends all the time.I just wish the head was a little biger. the dog loves to sail and stays with us every weekend.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) The People At Hunter are always great. they try to help with parts that are no longer made. they also make recommendations on fixing problem area's. THANK YOU HUNTER FOR ALL YOUR HELP!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I recommend tidewater marina brokerage in maryland. They made the boat buying experience a good one.
Other comments A great, affordable ,good looking, well made, coastal cruising sailboat.
