Review of the Hunter 240 by Tony

Year built 2000
Location of boat Florida
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I think so. The boat has lots of room for its size. It's also quite comfortable to overnight on. Great downwind performance, but it doesn't go to weather well. It heels quickly but I got used to that and now it's not a problem - even my dog can handle the heeling comfortably. It has high freeboard so I've found that it gets pushed around by the wind easily when I'm getting in and out of the slip. On a negative note I've found that the quality of construction is lacking for some little things. Self tapping screws were used to secure the tiller to the rudder post. The screws popped off at a race start. The same thing with the tiller extension. Easily fixed with through bolts or rivets.
Gear that's been added I added a tiller/motor attachment so that the motor and tiller turn together, which helps maneuvrability at low speed.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features The space on the boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I've found that the quality of construction is lacking for some little things. Sailing characterisitcs Downwind is really nice. Upwind the H240 doesn't point very well. It also heels qucikly. With a reefed main it handles very nicely in faily high winds.
Motoring characterisitcs Very poor when the breeze picks up because of the high freeboard. At low speed it is not very good getting in and out of the slip in a confined space. A motor/tiller attachment helps in this regard.
Liveability Good. Lots of space to sleep 4 overnight. Comfortable berths. The cockpit is large and the removable table is a great idea.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Great experience with the dealer in Orlando. Very friendly and exceptionally helpful and knowledgable.
