Review of the Hunter 22 by Fred Kalhorn

Year built 1982
Location of boat Bay Shore, NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added Cam cleats,on teak, just aft of the jib sheet winches. Roller furling
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features Easy to sail single-handed. Sails well in moderate winds 12-15 KTS with main sail only. With swing keel, only draws 2 ft 6 in of water, with center board up, which is great for bay sailing. High freeboard provides for a dry boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Have no design problems.
Sailing characterisitcs Can stay ahead of most any boat in a light wind. When the wind increases above 10 knots, can sail just about as fast with the main sail only. Only lose about .5 knot and the boat is much more stable. Sailing with the jib only, experienced extreme lee helm, so I gave up on that sailing mode.
Motoring characterisitcs With a 4 hp motor,I can cruse at 4 knots at mid power. An increase in power dosen't increase much in speed but only tends to lower the stern (motor bracket dips into water). Not a good boat for motoring but have no experience on other boats of equivalent size.
Liveability At 22 ft would not attempt to live aboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Have no justifiable complants, but would never buy another boat without obtaining a written guaranty that the boat doesn't have any leaks. Boat had severe leakage and had to have the centerboard trunk area rebuilt. The boat was tied up for six weeks, in prime sailing season, and cost $2000 to fix.
