Review of the Hunter 40.5 by Paul Marckx

Year built 1995
Location of boat Portland Oregon
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.The boat was the most bang for the buck. I go to the Seattle boat show every year. And every year I come home more impressed with what I've got and for what I paid. Asside from the fact of how well she sails and handles, the amenities aboard ect.
Gear that's been added The usual.Electronics, dodger, bimini with curtains, for the rainy winters. Tender, ground tackle as well as comfort items. Laptop with chart veiw pro and maptec charts. And furnace.
Structural or complex improvements None. Had some rain leaks but that was remedied with persistance and the right products in the the right places.
The boat's best features Looks. Amenities. Handling and sailing.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rudder shaft housing needed more support at the top with resin and cloth. Easy fix.
Sailing characterisitcs Gets a little squirley down wind in heavy sea and wind. Shorten down early. Goes to weather very well. Points well.
Motoring characterisitcs Love the Yanmar. Needs added fuel tank for extended range. Replacing rear water tank with one seems to be the answer with dual filters, cocks, for saftey. Add a watermaker to make up for the water tank.
Liveability I'm not a caveman. Have to have my comfort. Lots of light and visibility. Galley has almost everything. Two heads provide privacy for your guests forward, and you and your mate aft. We also took out the aft stateroom bed and replaced it with a queen inner spring, for even more comfort.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Good price. Not the best experence.
Other comments They should not have changed the model. The 40.5 is much better than the 410 In almost every way.
