Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by Tom French

Year built 1984
Location of boat Elk Rapids Michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 1984
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes the boat has been very good and is easy to sail single handed. The only problem I have is the engine. The engine is a 13 hp Yanmar 2GM with a 2.6 reduction gear. An 18 hp would have been much better because the 13 horse doesn't have the omph I need when motoring into the wind, and can't move the boat at hull speed. Other then that it's been an excellent boat and I consider the small engine a minor problem because it gets great fuel mileage.
Gear that's been added Autopilot, depth finder, boat speed indicator and wind speed indicator.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features The living space onboard, and the ease of handling in all conditions under sail and power.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The big mirror in the head came unglued and broke and some of the interior lights need to be replaced. But most of this stuff is because of age. Another thing, there is no fuel gauge onboard.
Sailing characterisitcs It's easy to sail. More than once I've looked like a sailing genius because the boat handles so well. Twice I've had to sail into harbors because the engine had quit (fuel pump problem) and laid the boat right along side the dock. This really impressed my wife.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat is under powered. The engine has a new electronic fuel pump so I haven't experianced the engine quitting since it's been installed. The fuel economy is great though, this helps.
Liveability The V birth is a little small for two people, and the aft birth is great for kids but for adults the overhead is a little low. Other than that it great.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) None
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Yes I bought from a dealer, no I don't have any comments.
Other comments If I had more money I think I would buy another. Maybe I'll get the 14' and us it for a sailing dinghy.
