Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Ken Shubert

Year built 1993
Location of boat Perry Lake, KS
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? This is our first sailboat and we are learningto sail it.
Gear that's been added A furling jib is going to be at the top of thelist. It came with a 'pop-up top' and vent fan.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features We bought it for the 'trailer-ability' but haven't gotten up courage to try it yet.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Everything works! The 3 jam cleats let goat bad times. The jib sheet cleats are hardto reach for singlehand sailing. The jibhas found more different things to get fouledon. It never seems to raise gracefully. A furler will be nice.
Sailing characterisitcs We are new to sailing and immediately found thatthe 23.5 will heel quickly and round-up into the wind fast enough to raise your heart rate. Itseems fairly easy to get moving if caught 'inirons'. It sails well on main alone and withthe main reefed alone since we have no storm jib.
Motoring characterisitcs We only motor in and out of the slipbut the 5hp Tohatsu starts easily and isadequate.
Liveability The table being moved (or removed) makes itversatile. The aft berth needs another coupleof inches height and some ventilation. Thekeel-board 'slaps' with each roll while onanchor and makes it very hard to sleep in theV berth. Our next night I'll try pulling theboard up. The Vinyl cushion covers are easyto keep clean but very hot and sticky.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) None
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Our dealer was helpful to get us started atsailing. Once we get the basics under control, they will help us more.
