Review of the Hunter 170 by Texas T2

Year built 2000
Location of boat Wisconsin
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Put adjustable luff line in jib. Added spin gear (Save about 40% from Hunter spin package by buying the sprit assembly directly from JY [$180], spin [about $450 from most sailmakers]and sheets & blocks [$100]). Added new racing sails.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Huge cockpit. Entire family can sit in it. High boom (again, family friendly). However, has performance capabilities. Just fun, fast, easy to launch, haul and maintain.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Balky furling when attempting to unfurl in light air; needs a good final yank on jib sheet. Some harmonic vibrtion from keel area when speed is between 3 and 4 knots. Had a 3" crack develop at joining point of storage area and cockpit. JY gave rapid response.
Sailing characterisitcs For family sailing, her conditions are in the under 10 knot area; what we see aroung here most in the mid summer. Above 10 knots, pay attention, reduce sail. Above 15 knots, just bring the experienced crew and get ready to plane.
Motoring characterisitcs I use the Honda 2 hp 4 stroke stolen from my dinghy; perfect. Can cruise at about 5 knots in flat water.
Liveability It's an open daysailer. If you can make this liveable, go for it.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Great. I e-mail a question and they answer.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Great.
Other comments If you have a young family or need a boat with room for an occasional crowd and desire sailing experiences that are no fuss, this boat is for you. Some of the best experiances are those early evenings in a dying breeze, ghosting around the harbor when your friends are glued to the docks in their floating motor homes.
