Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Perry Lazer

Year built 1994
Location of boat Northwestern Ohio
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1993
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? If I was turning back the clock for everything in my life I would. This was the best boat for us to have bought at that time. She is not the boat for us today. This boat is great for weekending until you have an older teenager who is not into sailing. (The boat is not large enough for his attitude)The boat was a very good choice for the Tennessee River in its delivered form, and with the addition of a Heavy Weather Jib and a second reef point in the main she is a capable sailor on Lake Eire.
Gear that's been added Harken TravelerWhisker PoleHeavy Weather Jib2nd Reef point in MainSailCover for Mainsail and Deck bag for JibLarge Bimini2 Opening PortsDay Night Solar Vent2 Gear Hammocksand much more
Structural or complex improvements Had the leaking Bow Eye Professionally repairedHAd the Nonskid Painted to fill small pits (under Warrenty) this also reduced the aggresivness of the non-skid to something that will not immediatly rip skin.
The boat's best features The interior volume for the price. The light air (3-5 knots) sailing charecteristics.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. As previously mentioned the Bow eye had a leak. The Steaming light at the masthead will not work so I am rewiring the mast this weekend. And the non skid had a gelcoat problem as well as being way to aggressive.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails well in light air 3-5 knotsThe boat excells in 5-10 knots (with the stock sails)Above 15 knots the boat would not sail well at all untill we got our heavy weather Jib and second reef point in the main sail. Now we are comfortable up to about 20-25 knots. Without the Traveler this boat would be a real handfull in anything over about 10 knots if there were any gusts.
Motoring characterisitcs Our 5 horsepower outboard is adequate
Liveability The boat must be rearranged for every different activity. Sailing, Sleeping, Lounging etc.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Difficult on some warrenty problems but if you are spending your money they they are fine
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
