Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Scott Young

Owner bought the boat in 2002  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It's a great boat for beginners.  
Gear that's been added Stereo, cigar lighter for accessories, steering rod from the rudder to the outboard.  
Structural or complex improvements None  
The boat's best features Beamy cabin, open transom is nice for diving.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. It doesn't tow very well behind a landcruiser wagon. The boat's center of gravity needs to be over the trailer's axle. I plan to move it forward this year and add a couple guides to the tongue. A weight distributing hitch may also be in the future.  
Sailing characterisitcs It'll pivot on the centerboard for sharp turns. Heels way over with inexperienced hand at tiller in strong winds. Good luck putting it on the trailer with sidewinds.  
Motoring characterisitcs The original 8hp Mariner pushes it through the water faster than sailing in light air.  
Liveability I haven't spent a night on it yet, but daysailing with the kids shows promise.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I haven't dealt with them.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought it from Rooke Sails of Memphis. They were very helpful, showing me how to set it up when I purchased it, answering any questions, kept in touch through email. They had the serial number on the motor and the hull number off by a letter, but that caused no problems once I caught it.  
Other comments The only thing I don't like about my 23.5 is the location of the porta potty (under the front berth). I would prefer to have a closet where the sink is for the head.
