Review of the Hunter 31 by Michael Akridge

Year built 2006
Location of boat Dahgren, VA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Most definitely, without a second thought. This boat is an awesome replacement for the 306. The Hunter design team really has it together for this boat. Not only does it sail well in light air it flys in higher winds.
Gear that's been added Heat/Air, GPS, Autopilot, TV/DVD, In-mast Furling
Structural or complex improvements Not yet
The boat's best features The ability to short-hand the boat. Not only does it sail well in light air it flys in higher winds.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The new ST1 Autopilot. This is a nation-wide problem with the "brain" that Raymarine put out. It all boils down to programming problems in the main computer and is currently being investigated and repaired.
Sailing characterisitcs I have had the opportunity to have this boat on everything from flat, calm waters to 3-4 foot chops. The boat handles well in all conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs Motored from North Carolina to northern Virginia. The Yanmar engine is extremely reliable and very fuel efficient. Once you find the sweet spot on the engine it will move you well and conserve fuel at the same time.
Liveability Very comfortable and well laid out.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't had to yet.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Most incredible expreience to date. I bought the boat from American Marine and Sail in North Carolina. They are the professionals of professionals. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to buy a Hunter.
