Review of the Hunter 44DS by Tjeerd de Vries

Year built 2003
Location of boat The Netherlands
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely yes, my wife and I are very very happy with her, we can not enjoy here enough. A Great ship with space and lots of comfort.
Gear that's been added Most of the Options available
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Space, Comfort, standing height, very easy to handle with the 2 of us, good sailing qualities. We love the in cockpit control, in mast furling etc. We did add the bow thruster for the sake of convenience, as we have in many occassions had high winds, and full marina's that do require quit a bit of manouvering.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Our solid teak table, formed blisters after 3 months! Other yacht owners do not like the unprotected screw heads on the protective edges, they can cause a lot of damage, if you do not take care
Sailing characterisitcs Very easy to handle, fast, stabel and very handy to trim, allowing nice relaxed sailing with 2 persons. She can handle stonger winds without any problems, although we have to make sure that we stow our gear in the spacious cabin, to stop it from wondering..
Motoring characterisitcs Engine is very reliable, and gives her an nice 5-6 knots at lower RPM. The 3 blade screw has a life of its own when the engine is off, and windmills badly, causing a whine and lots of Drag. Will replace it with a folding type soonest.
Liveability Once we are on her, we do not want to leave, it has all the comfort of a small condo. Plenty water, good showers, toilet facilities. Easy access through the stern entry. We have the Flatscreen and the Bose sound system, and love the ambiance. We do spend many evenings with our fellow yachtsman in the cockpit seating area in the back. It will handle 9 people easily and comfortably
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I did not
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought our Boat from VandenBosch yachting in Muiderzand in the netherlands. and there is only one word to describe that servis "fabulous" they have been so helpful, and went out of their way to please us. really very good.
