Review of the Hunter 23 by Peter I

Gear that's been added Between me and the prior (and first) owner: Harken jib furler Garhauer lifting motor mount Bimini Dodger (I don't use it at all) Stern pulpits Jib sheet tracks Block and tackle system to control main sheet traveler (a must, in my view) Accessory 12V socket PVC frame for canvas winter cover Gin pole for mast raise/lower Adjusting topping lift Swim platform/ladder combo  
Structural or complex improvements None  
The boat's best features Comfortable for day sailing on our lake, as the interior provides some respite Decent size cockpit Fairly easy to sail (I essentially single-hand, as my wife doesn't like to do the "work" of sailing) Since it came with trailer, easy enough to haul in and out each season, and trailer serves as cradle  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing major - I broke a furler connector, but that was my fault. Wish rudder were designed to lift and stay clear of water when moored. Need to add some kind of tiller lock to help when tacking.  
Sailing characterisitcs Easy to sail, decent enough speed, doesn't seem to point really well, not too much weather helm,not too tender if you watch it.  
Motoring characterisitcs I have an 8HP Honda, plenty big enough. have not been in any conditions that would stress it.  
Liveability I wouldn't - the cabin would be OK to sleep in, and probably comfortable for 2, but don't like the idea of the porta-potty with no enclosed head. Of course, I've been spoiled on friends' boats, like a 48 ft Island Packet.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Only once - asked them for specs on the standing rigging, and got a scanned PDF in email fairly promptly.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from prior owner, broker owning the yard had little do with transaction.  
Other comments It is a decent starter "pocket cruiser", and if you are a bit handy you can get one fairly cheaply, probably around 2500 + or -, just be prepared to do some maintenance.
