Review of the Hunter 23 by Steve

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. Probably. It's a great boat to learn on. And having the ability to tow it anywhere is a big plus for me right now.  
Gear that's been added Not really. Compass, VHF. Might try a reaching spinaker next year.  
Structural or complex improvements No. I did make a bracket at the base of the mast to hold a jin pole for single hand mast raising, cables to hold the mast centered while raising, and re-did the mast crutch with a 9 inch rubber roller so I can slide the mast forward by myself.  
The boat's best features Trailerability. Fixed keel.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I don't like the dock line pins, or cleats. I'd rather have real cleats. The plexiglas cabin cover is too light. I'd like to have something there that one could step on. I have problems with tiller flutter. It is just annoying.  
Sailing characterisitcs Much better than expected. On a 15+ knot wing and wing run. My GPS says that we hit 10mph...wow! It's nothing for me to close haul, or even reach at 7-8 mph. With a hull speed rating of 5.9 knots. I don't get why this boat is so fast. Low weight I guess.  
Motoring characterisitcs I have the stock Tohatsu 5hp. It pushes the boat okay. A little light in heavier seas.  
Liveability I've slept on the boat a few times. Okay for one or two people. I've never used the galley. Wish there was a built in ice box.

Other comments This is a great starter boat. However, sailing on the great lakes, I'm limited to "safe" seas. I get pretty nervous in 4-5 footers; and it's a bumpy ride. I'm already thinking about a bigger boat.
