Review of the Hunter 23 by John O'Brien

Year built 1986
Location of boat Lake Lanier, GA
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I "bought" this boat very cheaply, as the boat had been long neglected.
Gear that's been added boom vang, reefing hardware on boom (cheek block, cleat, etc), ran main and jib halyards to cockpit
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features sails well in light air
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. can't locate the source of small leaks, tiller mount pulled away from transom. Don't like the way the headstay goes into the anchor well- makes installing roller furling (a long term hope) a problem. Also don't like the lack of cleats for mooring, fenders, etc
Sailing characterisitcs Relative to its peers, the boat really moves in lighter air. Can't get away from a strong weather helm in close hauled in higher winds.
Motoring characterisitcs Original 5hp Nissan works great on a lake
Liveability ok for two for an overnite- at the dock. Not wild about the porta potty, a solution of last resort. Extra sails take up a lot of room forward.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) got this boat from an owner
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/a
Other comments In consideration of cost and performance, the H26 is a very nice choice for day sailing in a lake with characteristically light air.
