Review of the Hunter 23 by jim clemons

Owner bought the boat in 87  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No, not that it is not a god boat, because it is. I keep the boat in the water and do not trailer it, so that a small keel is less desirable. I wish I had bought a boat that did not have to have trailerable, shallow, small keel constraints.  
Gear that's been added Spinnaker, stern ladder, nav and safety gear.  
Structural or complex improvements Moved mast step on deck about 2" forward to try to eliminate excessive weather helm. Seemed to help a little.  
The boat's best features Lightweight hull, large sails for light wind,  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have excessive weather helm in any wind over 15 kt. despite reefing the main, raking mast forward, and moving weight aft. My boat is an early model with a smaller keel and swinging board inside the keel. It would be nice to know if boats without boards have the same weather helm problems.Heavy wind rips sail slides out of mainsail. Aluminum rudder housing ripped twice at very bottom, requiring rewelding and reinforcement. Bottom rudder pinion on transom broke. Strenghen these items if you're going off shore.  
Sailing characterisitcs Wonderful sailing boat in light winds. Points well.  
Motoring characterisitcs Bought a 8 h.p. 4 stroke Honda that starts first time every time for 4 years now. I highly recommend those 4 strokes.  
Liveability I lived aboard it for 3 months while I sailed alone from Tampa, to Key West, to Miami, thru Lake Okachobee, to Tampa. Plenty of room for one, but needs more ventilation (and full size refrigerator for beer, and a washer/dryer combo).
