Review of the Hunter Xcite by Jim Motley

Year built 2004
Location of boat Alabama
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, The boat is a great deal of fun although even with the Turbo option my 165lbs is a little heavy without some good winds. Contrary to what has been written about the boat properly rigged there should be no problem with the mast step and the boat is decent quality for the price. It will fly and is very agile.
Gear that's been added Added some blocks to the traveler to make it really work, helps sail shape. Looking at a cover down the road.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features 5 minute setup, fast and agile just a great dinghy racer. Turbo sail is mylar and makes this a go fast boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rudder handle was too long so I cut off about 4" of it, much better. As said before the traveler was somewhat of a joke, works with modifications. Nothin has broken as of now.
Sailing characterisitcs Fast and fun.
Motoring characterisitcs no motor here!
Liveability none
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) none
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any none
Other comments I think this boat has had some unfair press. Many were sold to sailing clubs for kids and I think many of the problems with the failed mast steps are due from improper rigging and abuse. Because of this you can pick up an Xcite really cheap, I think its a value.
