Review of the Hunter 146 by Mike Day

Year built 2006
Location of boat Ellsworth, Maine
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Topping lift, outhaul block, reefing lines, compass (fog frequent here), 'Tiller-tamer', spliced sheets and halyards
Structural or complex improvements Will likely add some access ports to the hidden space between deck and hull.
The boat's best features Relatively dry boat, moves good in light air. Excellent for single-handed afternoon sails.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No significant problems during first season. The 'crimped' running rigging is a little tacky (spliced mine).
Sailing characterisitcs Responsive and capable in variety of wind/water conditions
Motoring characterisitcs Two hp Honda moves it right along, current or not. (I am on an estuary about a half-mile from the bay with little room for tacking so usually motor in and/or out depending on wind direction.)
Liveability Haven't tried that.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Russels in Stocton Springs, Maine - excellent folks!
