Review of the Hunter 22 by Paul Westcott

Year built 1981
Location of boat Tacoma, Washington
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, suprisingly roomy for a 22, sail a lot better than I'd expected for such a small boat
Gear that's been added No, boat came very well equipped including a drifter and spinnaker.
Structural or complex improvements Previous owner had an oversized rudder blade constructed, approx. 25% larger and a foot longer. It performs well, I haven't tried out the original rudder blade that I got along with the new one yet so can't compare performance.
The boat's best features Interior accommodations for her size, stout rigging, quality hardware, and excellent sailing qualities.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Don't like electric galley pumps, will replace with hand pump.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is quicker than expected, a little heavy on weather helm, but that can be balanced by shifting the keel (centerboard?) a bit aft. Stiff enough to carry her sail well but can heel enough to ease the pressure on puffs.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat does well with a 7.5 Honda outboard. It's efficient on fuel, not especially noisy and easy starting. Not having to mix fuel is a solid plus.
Liveability For it's size very good. Not bad for a weekend or four or five days for two.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased Hunter 22 hull #222 from Bellhaven Yachts in Bellingham, WA. Very helpful people would deal with them again if the opportunity came up.
