Review of the Hunter 22 by Travis Schafer

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Hell yea.  
Gear that's been added Not a thing.  
Structural or complex improvements I had to replace the drum to the roller furler. Not bad concidering it is a 21 year old furling system (one that CDI still has a replacement drums for). I had to give the motor a major overhaul (7.5 Merc.)  
The boat's best features It has lots of room below. I'm 6'6" and can sleep down below comfortably. I'm not looking for standing headroom in anything under 35 feet. It also has lots of nice wood that break up all the white that some boats have. The cockpit is also long enough for me to stretch out on and read a book or relax.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Structurally, this boat is very sound. The decks don't move while I walk around (I'm 200+lbs), there is very little gel coat cracks- none of which are anywhere near the shrouds, and my windows or swing keel DON'T leak.  
Sailing characterisitcs This boat has done everything I've asked of it. I have had it out in the open ocean with no problems. I've sailed it in 25+ knot winds (reefed main) and 3 knot winds. It seems to do best between 6 and 12 but moves along at everything in between. So far the fastest I've had it going was 7.2 knots (for all you speeding sailors) and made passes on some pretty impressive boats i.e. Catalina 250. I think this boat has only missed one tack and that was probably my fault. Weather helm can be a bit of a problem depending on the wind (heavy) and sail configuration, but what sailboat doesn't have that problem at times.  
Motoring characterisitcs With my 7.5 Merc. I can half throttle it and easily get around 5 knots.  
Liveability Not very liveable but could easily do a weekend retreat on it.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not had to deal with them.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Fay's boat yard in New Hampshire. Because this boat is over 20 years old they really couldn't make any promises about the boat. It was an "as is" kind of deal.  
Other comments I take back every bad thing I ever said about Hunter sailboats.
