Review of the Hunter 22 by Shawn Cina

Owner bought the boat in 1999  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I originally bought it for the the for cruising, and the cabin on this boat boat is perfect for that. However it turned out I started getting in to handicap racing in the local club, and did really well, so I have the best of both worlds; cruising  
Gear that's been added Yes, all the spiniker hardware, genoa tracks, new sails, sternpulpit, boom vang, windward sheeting for the traveler, adjustable back stay, vhf radio, depth finder,  
Structural or complex improvements Yes, between the two centerboard brackets I added 2 broze bushings to take out the play from side to side. It helped the boat point higher.  
The boat's best features The flexability of the 22. Its easy to trailer especially with the e-z loader roll-on trailer and light weight swing centerboard, and again I can cruise comfortably and race fast.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The main complaint I have is that the boat has alot of weatherhelm. Although I do think the offset of the weatherhelm is that the boat is so fast in light air, ex. I beat a J-24 overall in 1-5 knots. I think the center of effort being so close to the center of lateral resistance has something to do with that. One thing I have learned to deal with the weatherhelm 1. Sail trim, flatten the main, by increasing the halyard tension,  
Sailing characterisitcs Does well in light air 1-10 at 11-15 weatherhelm starts to be problem, 15-20 reef time. Since I added the genoa tracks inside of the toe rails the boat points pretty high, but still wish the side shrouds would have been moved in about 3"-6".  
Motoring characterisitcs I would'nt know, mine is in the garage all the time. I hate motors!  
Liveability For two people its just right, anymore than that it starts getting to crowded.
