Review of the Hunter 326 by Tim Thomas

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I have been thoroughly impressed with the boat, despite the fact I had a preconceived notion that Hunter's were not the best quality. I am pleased to say I was misled.  
Gear that's been added Yep. I added a 3 blade variable pitch kiwiprop. This has reduced drag under sail and allowed me to easily motor along at 6.5 knots at 2800 rpm. That put rest to the concern about the 18hp being too small. I also added a selden retractable bowsprit and an Assymetrical Spinnaker. Downwind performance is now no problem. Replaced my sails with a new set of laminates last year also. I know veryone raves about the in mast furling, but I have a standard, full roach, full battened main and it makes a huge difference. I also added adjustable cars for the jib to eliminate thye need to go forward when sailing.  
Structural or complex improvements Only the structural addition is the selden bowsprit and I had to replace the holding tank, which had a small crack.  
The boat's best features The 326 is an excellent boat for entertaining friends and family. The large cockpit, good galley and ease of handling make for some great afternoon or evening sailing. She is also a very decent performer, with admirable boat speed and good manners in all kinds of weather. The boat is particularly comfortable and well laid out.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Let me warn you that the boat was built around that holding tank and it is no small feat trying to get it out through the aft cabin.  
Sailing characterisitcs I have been sailing this boat for three years now and have done my share of social daysailing and racing, including local and overnights. I have done two lake Ontario 300's and sailed the boat shorthanded in squals (45+ knots) with heavy short seas. I has taken everything nature has thrown at her and never looked like throwing in the towel. She is a pleasure to sail with friends and equally gratifying while racing.  
Motoring characterisitcs Once I added the kiwiprop I havent had a concern. She motors just fine and I suggest anyone that has a standard 2 blade fixed prop, switch it out for a 3 blade variable pitch.  
Liveability I generally only spend 2-4 days at a time onboard and have found her to be more than adequate. A weekend with the wife and 2 kids is no problem. The galley is great and the fridge is deep.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Not had to deal with them directly.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat privately, but have dealt with the local Hunter dealers and have found them to be very helpful.
