Review of the Hunter 54 by Jehu Hand

Year built 1982
Location of boat Newport Beach CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added complete electronics and wind instruments, replaced refrigeration, new generator, media center
Structural or complex improvements This model has a problem with the steering attach points. They rot out and I had to have some new ones fabricated out of carbon fiber.
The boat's best features Turns on a dime, fast, looks nice
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Steering attach points as discussed above.Dinghy garage sounds like a good idea but can get swamped there.
Sailing characterisitcs not good with light winds. Great 9 knots or above. Balances easily under sail. Hard to tack in light winds, as it tends to get in irons.
Motoring characterisitcs Fast but requires constant attention at the helm. Autopilot a necessity
Liveability narrow beam, not its biggest virtue
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Like any broker, don't believe anything you are told. Also very few surveyors are really good.
Other comments Its the nicest one around.
