Review of the Hunter 460 by George Lamb

Year built 2000
Location of boat Maimi Florida
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this boat sails exceptionally well. With the 77 horse diesel it also motors very well. Easy to handle in tight spaces when under power. Very little weather helm.Great lines, and with a few minor imfractions, was delivered with no problems.
Gear that's been added Added GPS, Autohelm, dual mic VHF,
Structural or complex improvements Divided forward captian's cabin into two smaller cabins. This boat will be used in a charter program, and as such, more cabins means more rentals.
The boat's best features Extremely comfortable cabin, easy to sail, points very well, motors well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Initially, the engine console was mounted into the edge of the cockpit seats. This was a really dumb location as each time you opened the locker (seat) it hit the key. Jib halyard clamp was located on front of mast, and as such the jib sheets got caught on it when sailing (and could open the clamp, thus dropping the jib). An inner forestay would keep the jib sheets off of the clamp, but as we did not have an inner forestay, we simply moved the clamp. We got the new model tank valves, and they leaked, still trying to get this worked out. Retaining ring on steering wheel did not lock correctly, thus allowing the wheen to slip to far forward, and potentially get in the way of the shift lever.Boat shifter got stuck in gear, but adjusting linkage fixed this problem.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat points excxeptionally well, and holds position well. On a beam reach in 10 to 15 knots, you can release the steering wheel and the boat holds its course. When sails are adjusted correctly, speed made good is between 50 and 60% of windspeed.
Motoring characterisitcs We installed the 77 horse Yanmar. When sailing into 20 knots at 3000 RPM, we averaged about 8.6 knots. Boat handles exceptionally well under power, and manuvers well in tight spaces. Also revserses much better that some of the other Hunters I have sailed. Fuel use, between 2 and 2.5 gallons per hour at 2500 RPMs. Full use increases sharply over 2600 RPMs.
Liveability Very comfortable, although cabins are a little small for two people. Especially forward cabins (we divided the forward stateroom into two smaller cabins, for 4 cabins in total.)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Overall we are excpetionally pleased with the boat. I was very surprised at the mounting of the engine control panel when we received the boat (it has since been moved).
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We purchased our boat through Florida Yacht in Miami. They have been great to work with, and very responsive to our request for repairs and corrections under warranty. I would buy from them again without hesitation.
