Review of the Hunter 450 by Bob Bass

Year built 1997
Location of boat Jacksonville, FL
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Radar, SSB, GPS (2), VHF (2), water maker, ice maker, sat phone, sat tv, elect. toilet conversion, anchor washdown pump, oil change pump, larger fuel filters (Raycor 500).
Structural or complex improvements Second arch (aluminum) to hold additional electronics and outboard winch, additional supports on aft rail to hold outboard motor, replaced top aft safety lines with stainless rail.
The boat's best features Like a condo that sails.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Poor ventilation in aft cabin when on anchor, even when wind scoop is used. Very poor construction of the frig and freezer boxes and lids and latches.
Sailing characterisitcs Excellent, but a lot of weather helm when the wind gets over 12 knots.
Motoring characterisitcs Great after the correct propellor was installed. Original was 1
Liveability Excellent. We just spent five months straight and didn't want to get off.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Excellent! Especially Eddie Breeden!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Excellent.
