Review of the Hunter 20 by Arthur Hicks

Owner bought the boat in 1986  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It fits my needs perfectly. It is very easily launched and retrieved, which is important since I keep it on the trailer at the marina and launch and retrieve it every time I sail. It is perfect for my wife and I to weekend on.  
Gear that's been added Bow pulpit and life lines. Bow anchor platform. Canvas pop-top cover. Halyards led to cockpit. Swim ladder. Jib haul down. Propane bar-b-que.  
Structural or complex improvements No. None needed.  
The boat's best features Very easily trailered. (with trailer and all gear weighs less than 2000 lb) Very easy to rig and un-rig. I can do it alone. Very easy to launch and retrieve. Easy to sail, very forgiving. Accomodations below have double berth on starboard side (though cozy) which my wife and I like.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Forward hatch is not "water tight" Because it is not square it will be very difficult and expensive to have a custom made lexan hatch made to replace it.  
Sailing characterisitcs I sail it with the original sails only. (Main and 110% Jib) It sails comfortably on all points of sail but could not be considered a racer. I have put one reef point in the main, and have sailed it very comfortably on reefed main alone in 20 to 25 Knot winds. (this is Kansas)  
Motoring characterisitcs We have a 4hp Johnson outboard which can drive it in all conditions we have experianced. It is easy to steer with the motor and tiller when necessary.  
Liveability We have made a canvas cover for the pop-top so that we can leave the top up at night and be private and bug free. This has been a big help to the liveability on weekends. We like the "cozy" double berth on the starboard side when the dinette is lowered. Since we eat in the cockpit almost all the time, we rarely switch it back and forth. Too bad there isn't more head room above the Porta-poty, it would be perfect.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I talked to them once to request a bow pulpit. They don't make one but gave me the name of a custom fabricater who did a fine job.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought the boat from an individual. Our local Hunter dealer, The Captain's Shop, of Lawrence Kansas, has been very helpful with all of my boating needs through the years.
