Review of the Hunter 420 by Bob Robeson

Year built 1998
Location of boat Oceanside, Ca
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2011
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The layout of this boat is just perfect, it is just exactly what we wanted for our 13 year old and us. This is a 2 bedroom condo on the water, it is great. The size of the tanks, the speed under power, the roller furling main and jib, so ease of deploying the sails all make this a very nice boat to be aboard. Unfortunately, it is not a very good sail boat. It does not like to run down wind at all, will not fly wing on wing. Ours is under powered due to small no batten main sail for the roller furling, fractional jib so just not enough sails for light wind, but once the wind comes up above 10 she sails fine, just not down wind. I believe we will make her sail just fine with a spin/geniker, whisker pole and some small re rigging. Maybe even a larger jib.
Gear that's been added NO, the boat was very well equipped when we got her.
Structural or complex improvements No yet, but we will be working on getting her to sail well as noted above.
The boat's best features The layout, the accommodations, and very well equipped
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The refrigerator is in a very bad spot, hard to get stuff in and out.
Sailing characterisitcs Does not point real well, but OK. does not run down wind at all, not even a little bit, needs help in this area. All breaching angles are great. We sail well in 8 knots or more, under 8 knots almost anything with a sail can pass us. Seems good to 15 knots, much more that that might want to reef.
Motoring characterisitcs We have a 56hp Yanmar and it pushes the boat just fine, hitting close to 8 knots WOT and cruises at 6-7 knots at 2750 rpm.
Liveability Fantastic, Like I said, it is a 2 bedroom condo, the best master stateroom of any boat 44' or smaller and better than most up to 50'
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have had many questions and every time I asked Hunter I got very quick, useful response. Great people to work with.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought is used form Jim Foyler at South coast Yachts and he was very helpful before, during and after that sail.
Other comments We have our eye on the hunter 50 cc.
