Review of the Hunter 19_93-96 by Norman Maguire

Year built 1993
Location of boat New Durham, NH
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably. My wife and I thought we wanted a larger boat. When we saw the H19, we signed on the bottom line.
Gear that's been added No. I plan to add another solar vent fan. We have one now, but I think it has seen better days. Two fans would allow for much greater ventilation.
Structural or complex improvements Adjusted the tiller and cut it back some. It really took up a lot of cockpit space due to length. It is much more comfortable now and no loss of control. I would really like to figure out a way to add rear seats(simliar to the 240 and 260) without going to the expense and work of adding rails.
The boat's best features Space below. Ease of launching and sailing solo. Ours came with a roller furler on the jib. I would recommend this feature to anyone with a boat this size or larger. This should be standard equipment.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rudder is HEAVY! I finally decided to just leave it down.
Sailing characterisitcs Initially seemed quite tender when a gust came up but I have got through the learning curve and all is well. I had to get used to the high freeboard. I installed a clinometer to get a feel for the proper heel. 15% is perfect and the boat seems to handle the best at that angle. I like to singlehand and do so a lot, but the boat sails better with the added weight of a couple of friends.
Motoring characterisitcs How do you describe the most vibration your body could possibly endure? I don't think there is any way to stop it either(unless you put the sails up and shut down the motor).
Liveability I'm not planning on it but I don't think it would be a problem. Our two dogs have plenty of room to spread out now when under way.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't had the opportunity. I hear they're great.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Fay's Boat Yard in Gilford, NH. They are the only sailboat dealer in the Lakes Region of NH. They do a great job and helped out with the negotiation with the previous owner as well as repairs to the jib.
Other comments I am extremely happy with the boat. I moved up from an O'Day Daysailer II that I had sailed for 20 years. This is small/big boat sailing and a great stepping stone to the next boat. My wife now REALLY wants to learn to sail.
