Review of the Hunter 19_93-96 by Bob and Joanne Pontius

Year built 1993
Location of boat Canyon Lake, Texas
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in !999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! It is perfect for us. Trailerable with a minivan, simple to rig, and comfortable to stay in for a weekend or longer. We got it with the camper top which we have used during extended stays when the weather was bad. We've won a number of races with other bigger, better boats - we didn't tell them so as to not hurt their feelings. Ha!
Gear that's been added
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Water ballast, relatively light weight for trailering, spacious cockpit, comfortable for weekend camping. Sails nice!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The tiller really needs a tamer or minder, whatever it is called. I have one with a clutch but haven't installed it yet. I have been been lashing the tiller with a line from the port stern horn cleat with a couple turns around the tiller to the starboard cleat. I've found that by changing the number of turns around the tiller or by adjusting the tension in the line I can control the degree of pressure needed to move the tiller. If I am making numerous turns and pretty much tending it closely less tension works fine. If I want to go forward and want the tiller and rudder to stay put,I tighten the line. I also installed a telescoping hatch adjuster to the forward hatch. It is nearly a wind scoop when fully open, especially during hot Texas nights.
Sailing characterisitcs I can't sail very close to the wind. Sometimes tacking becomes "sailing back and forth" with little progress to windward... so what else is new, huh?
Motoring characterisitcs I have a short shaft 4HP outboard that came with the boat. It really needs to be a long shaft. In heavy weather the prop is out of the water too much. In normal conditions it is fine.
Liveability Excellent for two for a few days. We've stayed as long as four days with only going ashore only for ice for the cooler.
