Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by Michael Alge

Year built 1979
Location of boat Catawba Island Ohio
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes , bit I would try to find one that was not so neglected. Finding a lot of saturated plywood core in the cabins sides and top
Gear that's been added Not yet but anything I add will be an improvement
Structural or complex improvements I am presently in the process of rebuilding the cabins sides and roof and will be installing bronze portlights instead of those cheap Bomar lights. I also will be replacing the holding tank and all of the sanitary hoses
The boat's best features This is the first time owning a Hunter
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I was shocked to find that the core material was in the form of little squares of plywood. There is very little strength in such a system and I would not trust it to far.
Sailing characterisitcs I have yet to sail this boat
Motoring characterisitcs I do not know about its motoring ability yet , I am hoping that the Yanmar 20 will be ok
Liveability Liveablity looks like it wil be just fine for two people
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I sent two or three E-mails to the Hunter web address and never got a responce. I guess my boat is too old for them to be concerned with it
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The boat came from a well known boatyard in Conneticutt and they shipped it to me with the holding tank full of sewage. Much of what was on their brokerage list was either no good or was not there
