Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by Brian Westcott

Year built 1979
Location of boat Norfolk, Va.
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I have purposely not wrote an article before now, to ensure i was happy with the vesssel. I can only say that after logging over 2000 N.M. on this vessel, I WOULD BUY THIS BOAT DEFINATELY! It is an absolute dream to sail and when the wind picks up, it just heals over nicely and handles everything the Chesapeake Bay has dealt her. As for the pointing capabilities, this vessel is remarkable, sailing 20 degrees off the wind. Very happy with the vessel and have no regrets for the purchase.
Gear that's been added Numerous list, will put in the highlights only; GPS, portlights, Icom 502 radio, auto-pilot, rule 3000 bilge pump, sur-flo pressure water system, jabsco head and all hoses, new cabin lights including red lights at galley and nav station, micro-vents in head and cabin, replaced adjustable back-stays, and replaced all blocks with garhauer products.
Structural or complex improvements N/A
The boat's best features Sailing characteristics, head room, liveabilty and seperate shower stall.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Portlights.
Sailing characterisitcs Mentioned above.
Motoring characterisitcs Original motor is underpowered for the vessel. Previous owner repowered in 1999 with a Westerbeke 35 H.P. and plenty of power to get in and out of slip, and motor at 5 1/2 knots.
Liveability Fabulous.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought the vessel from the original owner, who had a hard time parting with his lady after sailing her from New York to the Caribbean and beyond for twenty years.
Other comments Absolutely crazy about my 1979 Hunter 37C. Thank you John Cherubini for an incredible vessel.
