Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by Jim Legere

Year built 1983
Location of boat Nova Scotia, Canada
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. Not the perfect 37 footer, but probably the best value in 37' on the market.
Gear that's been added Extra ground tackle, anchor windlass, refridgeration. Planning on windvane self steering soon.
Structural or complex improvements Replaced rudder. need to do something about the plastic portlights.
The boat's best features Bought it for the layout, pleasantly surprised by the sailing performance.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rudder problems, wiring & batteries need upgrades. The usual moisture problems with cored decks.
Sailing characterisitcs She sails like witch in 20 to 30 knots. Not as weatherly as a sloop, but fast & sea kindly. Cutter is a great rig for short handed sailing. Love my asymetrical cruising spinnaker. We plan to go bluewater in her & I thinks she's good for it.
Motoring characterisitcs 6.3 knots at 2100 RPM. 30 HP Yanmar is a great little diesel.
Liveability Have lived on board comfortably for extended periods with an 8yr. old & 3yr. old. Need we say more?
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) OK
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The broker, Charlie Kneller at Atlantic Coast in Rock Hall, MD, was superb. Would buy another boat from the man.
Other comments Too bad Hunter no longer builds Cherubini designs. I don't think I'd buy a modern Hunter, but then, I am a traditionalist.
