Review of the Hunter 36_80-82 by Stan Saladyga

Year built 1980
Location of boat Tiverton, RI
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I feel that the Hunter is a well built boat. This is the second Hunter that I have owned. The first was a 1977 Hunter 25
Gear that's been added Raymarine AutoHelm ST3000 Garmin 176C GPS JRC 1500 Radar
Structural or complex improvements I had to pin the quadrant to the rudder post. A previous owner must have had the quadrant raised to accomodate the water heater and it was only tightened on the rudder post. Consequently I had great steerage to starboard and very little to port due slippage on the post. Working quarters were tight and it wasn't an easy job.
The boat's best features Best features in my opinion are it speed, how solid it is and its good looks.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Starboard water tank has developed a leak. Getting the cover off without cracking it was a difficult job and took two to do it. Designing the tank as an integral part of the boat was poor planning in my opinion. This repair will probably end up a winter project.
Sailing characterisitcs I find that the boat points reasonably well. I have experienced the weather helm others have talked about but find that easing the main helps to eliminate it. Other than that I find the boat to handle well in all weather.
Motoring characterisitcs The 2QM20 with 22 HP is quite adequate for this boat. When I was purchasing the boat the broker told me it was only 18 HP. I was a little concerned that it may be a bit underpowered, however a good friend of mine told me that this Yanmar was industrial grade and only installed for a couple of years and did in fact have 22 HP.
Liveability Boat is fine for long weekends and a week or so at a time.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't done so as of yet, but I am planning to contact them in regards to the water tank leak.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Broker did an okay job, but I was disappointed in that after I agreed on a price and he had the boat sold I never saw him again. He actually sent someone else to close.
