Review of the Hunter 34 by P.J.W.

Year built 1984
Location of boat 34'
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 94
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes and I would look for a boat that was as close to stock from the manufacturer so as not to pay for the previous owners upgrades. That way I can upgrade to my liking, not pay for his and have to take off and re-fit leaving holes etc. Another advantage is the boat was probable not pushed to hard.
Gear that's been added Computer faired keel, Interlux 2000 with VC17, Garhauer hard vang and ball bearing jib cars, spiniker pole
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Interior layout works well for a off shore racing crew of 7-8, deck layout also works well for when I singlehand and when I doublehand race. The boat does exceptionally well in light wind (5 knots or less).
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. swept back spreaders play havoc broad raching in heavy wind, and going down wind in any wind is also a problem.
Sailing characterisitcs 15-20k true you need crew on the rail, 20-22k true probably needs a #2 and/or 1 reef, 22-25k true a #3 and a double reef.
Motoring characterisitcs with a 2 blade geared folding prop by Flex-O-Fold, Jensen Marine, I have no problems backing out of my slip, and can do 7 knots @ 2700
Liveability very comfortable w/ 2 couples
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) as the second owner they were very helpful giving me details regarding specs not in the manual once I gave them model
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any bought from private party
