Review of the Hunter 34 by lnikl

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.  
Gear that's been added Minor things.  
Structural or complex improvements Nothing structural. Have replaced the fuel tank.  
The boat's best features Sailing capabilities, handling under sail and power, spacious accommodations, quality of construction  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Aluminum fuel tank corrosion. I replaced it. Good for another 35 years.  
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails very well. I really enjoy working the breezes and the currents. It has a tall mast and the boat is tender. Above 15 knots, the first reef goes in. This is what other H34 owners seem to also report. Personally, I prefer this because it performs well in light air and if reefed, in heavy air too.  
Motoring characterisitcs The boat motors well. It will turn in about 1.1 boat lengths and is very maneuverable in tight anchorages where we have to spin around, set the hook and then stern tie. It backs up very well when the bottom is clean. I do notice that it doesn’t back up as well when she is overdue for a haul out but still better than my previous boat did.  
Liveability Very comfortable. It has everything we need: hot and cold water (lots of storage), refrigeration, two burner diesel stove/heater combo fuel headroom and lots of space to move around. Our trips are either weekends/long weekends and two summer trips of 10-14 days in duration and its no problem.

Other comments This boat has handled some big waves without problems. This summer we had some very big seas at the south end of Texada Island. They were a good 10’ and rather pointy. The coast guard came by in their 45’ lifeboat and asked if we were OK. I was sipping coffee and gave them the all OK sign.
