Review of the Hunter 336 by Carlos Solares

Year built 1996
Location of boat Puerto Rico
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, but with some changes in equipment;I would install a furling main instead of full batten main/lazy jack system (the battens get stuck in the lazy jacks whenraising the main), and I would install anelectric halyard winch. I guess I'm just lazy!I would have some of the electronics and convenience items installed at the factoryfor a neater, hassle free installation.
Gear that's been added Yes; Autohelm 4000 Autopilot, GPS, 12V TV/VCR.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features This boat is particularly roomy, light andairy. The exterior is easy to keep clean, except for some of the stainless hardware, which seems to stain easily. The boat sails well and is easy to handle for a beginner like myself. She is quiet under power and frugal with fuel.Livability for short periods of time is great; for extended periods, storage capacity is a bit limited. The access to the swim platform/transom areais very clever.Access to the engine is good.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The plastic fuel and water tanks don't seem too durable and aren't secured in the best way (nylon packing straps). Some bolts do not have backing plates, theyare machine bolted directly into the fiberglass, so if you overtighten they are easy to strip or crack. The anchor locker, which looks so good atthe show, holds water in it so your anchorrode stays wet and eventually turns green.Plus it is a bit small. It's hard to add equipment because there isno extra wiring or conduit left for this purpose. The caulking/sealant used in the rear sectionof the trim/rub strip is not mold resistantso it turns green after a while. Very minor, but yucky looking!
Sailing characterisitcs She sails best in 10-15 knots of wind,(Roughly 5.5-6 knots on a reach) below ten knots she is not very speedy.Weather helm is acceptable... She lets you know when you're doing somethingwrong in no uncertain terms. A good thing forus beginners!
Motoring characterisitcs Good control in forward and reverse. Vibrationis minimal below 3000RPMs and noise levels arevery low.Speed at 3000RPM is roughly 6.3 knots inflat water.
Liveability Liveability is one of her strong suits. Ventilation is excellent, the interioris bright and she is roomy. The front cabin is small, but comfortablefor anyone under 12.The kitchen is well laid out, but storagefor provisions is minimal. The aft cabin is large and comfortable. The cockpit is also big; the curved cornersdon't allow you to por up a cushion to laydown very comfortably, tho' (Am I nitpicking?)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I haven't.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer's pleasant and knowledgeable, but you have to hassle him to get things done. Isn't that themodern way of life, though?
