Review of the Hunter 336 by Richard H. Sweat

Year built 1996
Location of boat Pickwick Dam Tennessee
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? NOOverall the boat handles well and sails very good. But it is plagued by minor structural and electrical problems. Frankly, the boat is a LEMON. My wife cries a lot, and I'm depressed when you consider that we thought we were buying our dream boat to sail down the Tenn-Tom and cruise the ocean. I will have to sink a few thousand of my own money to get it up to standards to sell.
Gear that's been added No. I wouldnt sink another dime in adding anything else to this boat.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features It looks good.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The battery charger fried 6 new batteries before I discovered what the problem was. (My expense)Bilge pump does not work properly. You have to tap it to make it come on.Portall continually leaksHead pump unit has been replaced and still does not function properly. Also a horrible smell fills boat when system pumped.Only insturment that works is the fuel guage. The knot meter, depth finder, RPM indicator went out a long time ago. Radio has a short, Running lights may or may not work. Roller-fuller will not hold GibLife line was cut to short where it disconnects and is threaded at last two rings and will give way if leaned against. Cannot be adjusted out anymore. Other problems I cannot list.
Sailing characterisitcs My weekends of sailing are spent with a tool box and driving up and down the highway looking for repair materials. What few times I got it outside the slip, I ended up motoring because the Gib wont stay in the furler.
Motoring characterisitcs The engine works great. It was made in Japan.
Liveability The boat has plenty of light, room and is attractive inside. Sleeping is comfortable while your spending weekends trying to correct the problems.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter did replace the pump unit that was cracked, but it does not work either. They have not responded to a letter sent last year, an E-mail and a telephone call. They did send me two coffee mugs. I had always heard that they had a great service department--guess I just fell through the cracks with them.I could not recommend them at this point.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any About what you would expect from a YUGO car dealer. It has been an experience. They said for example that the RPM problem is probably in the sending unit--but they dont know where the sending unit is located--so thats the reason they cant fix it.
