Review of the Hunter 310 by Ray

Year built 1998
Location of boat Long Island, NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I am very pleased with its handling
Gear that's been added RefrigeratorStereoShadesIn-mast furler
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Points well, cockpit is very roomy and has adequate cup holders, great seats on stern rail, walk thru cockpit with very comfortable seat that swings down, good galley, plenty of room for 6 to sleep over. Jib furler and in-mast furler are great especially for short handed sailing and furling in heavy winds.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Cabin light lenses are too thin so they break easily, line for in-mast furler came undone but winch on mast was used for backup, knotmeter sending unit fouls easily from growth and has to be cleaned frequently (next year I will spray it with a growth repellant before the boat goes in the water), indicator on battery charger is not easily seen unless one gets on hands and knees to look into aft starboard locker, aft starboard locker could use more organization for storing things (exhaust hose and charger get in way).
Sailing characterisitcs Points exceptionally well but with winds over 15 knots the boat heals alot which requires reefing. For light air is would recommend a larger jib and even a 150% genoa.
Motoring characterisitcs Engine vibration at 2600 rpm but smooths out at 3200 rpm. Low speed (2200 rpm) has little to no vibration. Excellent fuel economy. 18hp Yanmar is perfect since hull speed is reached before engine is at full power (4400 rpm).
Liveability Aft cabin ceiling is very low. A double sink in the galley would be better. More ventalation in the aft cabin would help. V berth is large and plenty of room with dinnette full down. Seats in salon are comfortable and port holes are in a great spot to look outside. Freezer is in great spot and easy to access. Microwave is perfect size but the stove does not gimble. This may be a problem for ocean sailing. Tell you next year.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Greg (Hunter's rep) is great. I talked with him on a few occasions and he was very responsive and informative. Its a pleasure dealing with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Long Island Yacht Sales (Glen and Bill) have been great. My boat was a little late but they more than satisfied me with how the boat was outfitted and the price was great.
