Review of the Hunter 25_73-83 by Peggy Lynch

Year built 1982
Location of boat Gloucester Point VA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definately. This is an excellent first boat. I was fortunate and found one that while neglected and left "alone" in a boat yard for 2 years had otherwise been very well cared for. The nice traditional look and design are pleasing to the eye and the interior layout very comfortable for day sailing. I expecially like the ventilation provided by the screened portholes. My husband is 6'3" so he has been an uncomfortable addition...:. However, for the first year when I was sailing and staying on her alone, it was perfect.
Gear that's been added Sunshade, depth sounder and knot meter, on board battery charger, second battery, gps, tiller tamer, magnum gas grill, insulation around the icebox,cd player, hatch and companionway screens, electric starter for the motor, lifeline cushions, cockit cushions, headsail bag, electric fan, interior halogen lighting, dc connection bank, small cabin heater, new taller portapottie
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features She points very well and is easy to sail even for a novice. Roomy interior cabin layout is very comfortable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Outboard motor is difficult to manuever for a short person and she does not respond well in reverse, especially under windy conditios. I have had several heart stopping close encounters with other docked boats when attempting to leave my slip. The hank on jib can be difficult to change out under adverse weather conditions ( bow area is narrow and the deck gets very slippery when wet). Ventilation in the storage areas is poor. I have cut holes and covered them with vent covers to get better air circulation.
Sailing characterisitcs Handles well, points accurately
Motoring characterisitcs As mentioned above motoring with a 9.9 hp outboard is slow but reliable. Manueverablilty is poor at low speeds
Liveability Comfortable for short stays with not more than two people. Cooking when under sail almost impossible
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
