Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by Eric Epstein

Year built 1985
Location of boat Mayo, MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, So far its a great boat.
Gear that's been added It came very well equiped. The autopilot is a great feature. Never knew how I survived without one. It also has a bimini, dodger, VHF, AM/FM/Cass stereo, loran, knot meter, depth meter, and wind indicator. The engine has a water separater and automax charger installed.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features The large cabin, storage and great tracking under sail.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No fuel guage, warning lights on the engine, the head is very slow and hard to pump. A few gelcoat cracks in th cockpit cowling, and the chainplates.
Sailing characterisitcs Tracks well, even in moderate seas. Handles rough seas well. Following seas can tend to push the rudder over.
Motoring characterisitcs Turns on a dime. Slow and slightly underpowered.
Liveability Very roomy and easy to move around. Berths are nice, although the front could be small for adults, its perfect for kids.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not dealt with them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer (A-1 sailboats, Mayo, MD) was very nice and helpful. They gave me alot of time and attention.
