Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by john n

Year built 1991
Location of boat barnegat bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1991
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Over the past 15 years I have owned a series of Hunters starting with the 25 (a great boat) and progressing through a 31,34 and finally a 37.5. Hunter gives you maximum boat for your money. For costal cruising this line of boats has been just fine. Most of the time I sail alone (my family joins me at the dock) and the 37.5 is an easy boat to single hand.
Gear that's been added
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features The best features of the boat are its interior room- more than most boats of its size. The cockpit makes for easy single handed sailing- great for cocktail parties too. While the sail plan is great for light to moderate air sailing, the tall mast, large sail area makes for frequent sail changes and adjustments as the wind speed increases. This is not a problem in protected areas although in a blow this could be a problem.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Jiffy reefing of the main has been a problem. Roller furling of the jib has had to be repaired. Don't roll the jib with excessive jib halyard tension.
Sailing characterisitcs see above
Motoring characterisitcs No problems
Liveability Have not lived on it but is a great gathering place at the end of the day.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Tidewater marine --very good. Previous experience in 1980's with NJ dealers poor. New dealers in the area now--no experience.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
