Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by David Aussicker, Ph.D.

Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. 1. Rudder needs to be painted in a light color--as owners reference states. I experienced a warp rudder on my 28.5 when I painted with black anti-fouling and exposed it to winter lay-up sun2. Cracks in the seam between the keel and the hull. I have observed others with same problem. My solution has been to use underwater silicone because it is flexible--and apparently there is considerable flex in this area3. Hot water thermostat in this Hunter and my other 3 Hunters were all set too high.4. Portlights craze after a few years  
Sailing characterisitcs A fairly stiff boat with good sailing abilities for a cruiser. I have surfed at 9.5 (GPS corrected) in heavy air and following seas.  
Motoring characterisitcs In relatively calm seas can maintain 6 under power alone. Needs sail assist to reach this speed with any wave action. Against heavy seas and wind--look for no more than 4 kts.  
Liveability Great amenities for my family of 6 for one week to 10 days, after that, no boat is large enough. The cockpit storage areas are great for strollers, etc.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter National (FL) is great.
