Review of the Hunter 25_73-83 by Brian O'Connell

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definitely. Sea Squared is my first boat; I bought her well sailed, but pretty well taken care of. Very little in the way of heavy maintenance or expense has been required; have had the bottom painted and have replaced a cracked forward hatch and the mainsheet. She survived Hurricane Ivan this summer without a scratch, something many very expensive boats around here did not do. So I have decided that I should at least take better care of the teak. She sails very well and is quite forgiving of momentary lapses, which I commit often while sailing solo on Choctawhatchie Bay. Comfortable for two overnight, and overall, a fine boat for day/weekend sailing year round in Florida.  
Gear that's been added Replaced cracked and leaky foredeck hatch. Followed advice from this forum (Jon Bastien -- thanks!) and used a Lewmar Ocean 60, flat base. Worked very well; a bit expensive, but strong and will last forever, I hope.  
Structural or complex improvements See above.  
The boat's best features Forgiving in tough/gusty condition, and a joy to sail in most types of wind. Very easy single-handed; I need to raise and lower the halyards at the mast, but have found that to be of little concern once I got the hang of it.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The original foredeck hatch was pretty flimsy. A friend's young daughter barely sat on it, and it cracked. Hence, the need to replace with something stronger.  
Sailing characterisitcs She heels fairly easily up to about 25 degrees, and then settles in. Have rarely had her go beyond that, even in gusty 20-25 knot winds. Doesn't point too well into the wind; when beating, need to keep her about 45 degrees off the wind to make decent headway (I use a 110 jib).  
Motoring characterisitcs Have an old Johnson 6hp Sailmaster. The boat backs well out of the dock, and motors well in and out of the marina, and in/out of the channel when I don't feel like tacking.  
Liveability OK for a weekend for no more than two, unless you're really in to close quarters.
